I just had a wonderful interview with a popular wedding magazine. The featured topic happens to be " Weddings: Its more FUN in the Philippines" I shared a wedding we will be doing sometime in December where the theme is actually Filipiniana. This truly has its sets of challenges mainly because Filipino music is so diverse and influenced that you might wanna say its pretty much like what i heard from somewhere, there is no distinct sound when it comes to Philippine Music. What we are known for is the ability to interpret it in a way close to Filipino hearts. Copying it and turning it into our own. Think of the Jeepney, the tricycle. Take any music, when interpreted by Filipinos, we do it way better. I just didn't try to mention that WORD " Ingenuity " which Filipinos are very known for. I wanted to do a wedding with Rondalla welcoming the guests, Chamber Orchestra playing old Church music, strolling musicians welcoming the guests to a Filipino-inspired Restaurant like one in Intramuros or at Antonio's in Tagaytay. Kundiman singers serenading with a guitar player on their own take of "Maalala Mo Kaya". We would be taking this challenge on reviving our beautiful music, our own Philippine music to showcase the talents, the experience and why Weddings are more FUN in the Philippines. Why is it more fun again? ... Because Filipinos don't just copy, we do things WAY better!!!

A proper instrumentation depends largely on the ocassion you might be having. Solo, duet, trio and quartet are best for small venues like a chapel for wedding, little garden for ceremonies, and an intimate setting for reception. These groups can entertain 50- 250 guests given an adequate amplification. But how do we choose what best goes with what? Always remember to have an accompanying instrument like a piano, guitar, bass or cello. Once you have this, take note of an instrument playing the melody. Idealy like a violin, flute, voice or any instrument practically. And dont forget the one who will play the harmony, a second voice that can give more texture to your music. It can be from the same group of instruments, or not, so long as it is not higher-sounding than the soloist. Say, a String quartet has Cello who plays the bass line, viola plays the accompanying rhythm, 2nd violin plays the harmony and 1st violin plays the melody. You may substitute the violins with flute and then call it a mixed quartet. For vocal groups, the best choice would be a Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass or the SATB. If you wish to have a piano in the group, you can have piano as accompanying, bass/cello for lower body tone, violinists who can play melody or harmony, flutes who can do the same, or male and female singers. You can make a lot of combinations so long as you remember the proper instrumentation guidelines. Join us in our discussions or visit our website at www.tenstringedlyre.com rep·er·toire

One wedding i attended, the crowd went on a hilarious turn when the band started to play " achy breaky heart ". On another, eyes rolling on the bride's side of the church, the musicians were playing the Ex's theme song. On several occasions, wedding music has made a rather infamous take on the supposedly memorable, in some cases "The" most memorable event in a couple's lives. Choosing music and the players is not too hard to do. But I must say it is imperative to book your music ahead of time because : # 1. IT GIVES YOU TIME TO LOOK AT THE LIST. You can change, you can add and even ask some musicians to arrange music for you so that your occasion be as memorable as you want it to be. # 2. IT GIVES YOU TIME TO CHECK ON THE PLAYERS. Whether you can check their videos online, see them live in a perfomance or in some pricey set up, you can have an audition for musicians so that you know what to expect in your wedding. Also make sure you get to see who the players would be, chances are, you book a female quartet and you end up with a mariachi band. Oh yes, it happens. Especially when it is peak season, you wish to book this particular group, but eventually some have decided to get a better deal and get replacements. # 3. YOU CAN ALWAYS CUSTOMIZE YOUR WEDDING. This is your day, isn't it? Why would you book a double quartet if your guests are just 50'ish? Why choose a group that has horns if your chapel is too small. Always consider things like, theme of the wedding, number of guests and the age of the couple. Customize guys!!! You don't want your kids to make your wedding video a laughing stock. So, are you still slacking with your wedding music booking? With tenstringedlyre , we always value booking ahead of time that's why we give 10% discount to any package you wish to have in your wedding. Inquire, ask around, compare, but if you wish to have a personalized wedding music, you need not go too far ü visit us at www.tenstringedlyre.com In the Philippines, the basic standard rate for hiring musicians per gig is 2,500. Basic means three to four hours of playing. But, we always need to consider so much more in booking musicians. We need to understand that in 10,000 , you cannot demand for a quartet already just because you know their basic rate is as such.
Booking musicians require rehearsals. They need transport money, they need food allowance, they need assurance that within the day, musicians can be satisfied and happy to be booked in your wedding because they have reserved the whole day for you not just some three to four hours of playing. So what is it in a real booking musician's budget? Always consider to book professional musicians. Those people who have gone to music schools or at least have trained with respectable teachers. These people have paid so much learning their crafts and so the profession should be very well uplifted. Also consider that the location of your wedding might not be so accessible by public transport. Let's face it, not everybody has their own car. And lastly, musicians is no other different than your guests in the wedding. We also need to be provided with reserved seats for food to be taken accordingly, not some styro-packed lunch that you can distribute to the artists and if it says buffet, it should mean buffet = ) Booking musicians is not hard to do, just be wise and inquisitive. Here at tenstringedlyre we feature our artsist, their backgrounds, upload mp3 and videos so you can gauge if our group suits your standards. Remember, if your musicians are paid cheaply, you can very well expect what to listen to. Join us in our discussion with comments and suggestions. |
